Sai Kung Coastal Cleanup Fun Day – Pak Lap Wan, 21 Nov

Hong Kong is home to over two hundred islands, dozens of beaches, and more than 400 square kilometers of country parks. For centuries the city has been known as one of the major ports in Asia, however, something other than ships is landing on Hong Kong’s beaches in 2021.

Plastic pollution is plaguing beaches across the world and Hong Kong is no different. Year after year our reliance on plastics is growing, as is the amount of waste winding up on our beautiful shores.

As well as this, a lack of understanding from some in society about the importance of waste management has led to areas that are much closer to home: hiking paths and even the streets we walk down every day to be clogged by the same pollution problems.

Over the years, Green Hour has organized a series of public events from beach cleanups, to hikes and plogs for you to do your bit for the environment. This coastal cleanup at Pak Lap Wan on 21 November is one of them.

May 4th Mother’s Day Plog and Cleanup

Let’s kick off the summer with a plog! And what better way to celebrate Mother’s Day (a week in advance because we’re that eager) than by giving back to Mother nature herself. And with the date so strategically selected, why not have The Force push us thru this plog?

Eco Marine Adventure Cleanup, Encompass and HKPloggers are joining forces to host a coastal trail cleanup from Mui Wo ferry pier in South Lantau from 2:00pm to around 6:00pm. The route passes along many small beaches and areas clogged with polystyrene from the great typhoons of 2017 and 2018 which cause a threat to coastal wildlife as well as the beloved local buffalo and cow herds.

Ploggers will jog/hike as a group or in a few groups for around 3.5km on fairly flat trail of easy to intermediate difficulty terrain with around 100m elevation gain whilst checking out the beautiful scenery and rubbish black spots. The group will then turn around and cleanup some of these rubbish back spots. The total distance of the plog will be around 7km with around 200m elevation gain. Do not fret, The Force welcomes all skill levels of hikers into the team – the more, the merrier!

Meeting Time and Date: 2:00pm, Saturday 4th May 2019

Meeting Place: Mui Wo ferry pier https://goo.gl/maps/kXtDCGtEUWn

“Go Green! Ma Wan!” family friendly beach cleanup and beach art workshop

Eco Marine is hosting a family-friendly beach cleanup and beach art workshop on Sunday 22 July 2018 at Park Island as part of the “Go Green! Ma Wan!” campaign organized by Cafe Roma. Cafe Roma will be generously supporting the event by offering complimentary drinks (with no straws!) and a special offer for the Green Menu at their restaurant after the cleanup event.

The “Go Green! Ma Wan!” campaign will launch permanent green initiatives at Cafe Roma, including banning of plastic straws and stirrers starting 1 July 2018. Customers are invited to be a part of the “Go Green! Ma Wan!” campaign by completing Green Missions to accumulate stamps for eco-gifts redemption. Customers may also indulge in Cafe Roma’s signature vegetarian dishes from their permanent ‘Green Menu’ in front of the stunning view of Tsing Ma Bridge.

In addition to the main beach which is kept in pristine condition by government cleaners, Ma Wan has numerous small beaches and rocky shorelines that are not regularly cleaned by government cleaners. Located between Tsing Yi, the New Territories and Lantau and surrounded by some major waterways, it is no surprise that all sorts of manmade rubbish wash ashore Ma Wan’s small beaches. Manmade rubbish found on these beaches range from macro debris such as polystyrene containers, single use plastic cups, and bottles to micro debris like plastic filament, broken down polystyrene and the ever present and extremely harmful pre-production plastic pellets. Your helping hand would be much appreciated!

As part of the cleanup, Eco Marine’s artist in residence Salome Tam will be hosting a Nature/UnnaturePile art workshop, which will be suitable for the whole family. Naturepiles are temporary installations made in situ from found natural materials that speak of the beauty of our surroundings, our relationship with nature and the passage of time. They serve as markings of special memories when out exploring and adventuring.

The nature/unnaturepile series was created to highlight the impact we have on the environment, especially through single use plastic in our lives. For this series, a naturepile is made alongside an unnaturepile of found ocean plastic waste. After documenting the two together in one location, the unnaturepile is removed with other collected plastic waste items from the clean up at that specific site.

Eco Marine hosts Keilem and Salome (Tel/Whatsapp 63920336) will meet you at the Park Island Pier at 10:00 am and walk together around 15 to 20 min to the beach cleanup site (easy walk).

You will work on beach cleanup from arrival at around 10:20am to 11:30am (including some breaks). Eco Marine will provide a beach cleanup and safety briefing and distribute gloves and rubbish bags. If you have your own gloves and or other equipment, please feel free to bring these. Some useful tools are tongs and gardening shears. Gather up as much man made rubbish and debris as you can in the available time.

At 11:30 am, Eco Marine’s artist in residence Salome will lead an interactive art workshop using found materials. Participants will make nature/unnaturepiles and document these to be a part to the Eco Marine nature/unnaturepile art series. Adults as well as family groups are welcome to join. Those that do not wish to take part can continue the general cleanup.

At 12:30 pm, the group will pack up and walk together to Cafe Roma (15 to 20 min) where complimentary drinks (without straws!) and special offer for Green Menu generously sponsored by Cafe Roma will be served. Prizes will be awarded for ‘most interesting rubbish item found’ and best ‘nature/unnaturepile’.

The event will officially end at 2pm. Participants can choose to take one of the ferries or buses to depart.

Date: Sunday 22 July 2018

Time: 10am – 2pm

Place: Park Island Pier, Ma Wan
