Attention runners! Looking for a challenge? Get ready for an adventure! Orbis Hong Kong invites runners to compete in the 2014 Great Ethiopian Run on 23rd November in the world’s third highest capital, Addis Ababa. Running 10 km at 10,000 feet above sea level, participants will help save the sight of Ethiopians at immediate risk from blindness due to trachoma.
An estimated 21 million Ethiopians, primarily women and children, suffer from trachoma, a highly infectious eye disease that is easily spread between infected and healthy eyes by flies, fingers or clothing. The infection thrives in areas where people have limited access to clean water and basic health care. Treatment with antibiotics or through increased environmental and lifestyle changes costs very little but contributes immeasurably to alleviating the epidemic and creating hope for a productive future.
Founded in 2001, the Great Ethiopian Run will bring together over 30,000 competitors this year. Participants of the Orbis team are asked to support Orbis‘s commitment to eliminating blinding trachoma and other eye diseases in Ethiopia by raising a minimum donation of HK$15,000, in addition to the necessary travel costs estimated to be HK$25,000. ORBIS Hong Kong was established in early 90s when a group of impassioned individuals who shared the dream of a world free from preventable blindness came together to raise public awareness about eye care issues. That same year, three high-profile supporters donated US$14 million to fund the purchase of a DC-10 airplane to replace the existing DC-8 Flying Eye Hospital. The biggest of these supporters was leading local businessman Mr. Y.C. Ho, who generously donated US$7 million of the DC-10’s cost. He and his fellow donors’ extraordinary kindness succeeded in instantly raising awareness about ORBIS’s presence in Hong Kong and its worldwide sight-saving work.
