WFHK Bun Run – Help fight food waste! 28 Aug

23 Aug

Feel like an evening run AND eliminate food waste by donating it to the elderly and low-income families? If your answer is yes, read on.

Waste Free Hong Kong has teamed up with Maxim’s Cakes & arome to help reduce food waste across the city. They welcome people from all backgrounds to join them every Wednesday for their ‘Bun Run‘.

Every Wednesday evening a group of volunteers will run together in groups to collect surplus bread from bakeries at closing time and bring them to their partner organisation, People’s Service Centre.

The bread is then distributed amongst the elderly and low-income families throughout the Sham Shui Po district, where the PSC is based.

WHAT IS A ‘BUN RUN’?
Waste Free Hong Kong, being an organisation that works to alleviate the ever growing amount of rubbish in our landfills, would be crazy to ignore the 3,500 tonnes of food waste entering landfills EVERY DAY in Hong Kong alone.

Due to the success of their plogs, Waste Free Hong Kong has decided to organise ‘Bun Runs‘ every Wednesday when possible.

Their Bun Runs will eventually take place throughout Hong Kong, however they are currently focusing on the Central & Western District, collecting surplus bread from Maxim’s Bakeries and arome.

Bread collection isn’t anything new, but as Waste Free Hong Kong works together in a group, it’s a great way to meet new people and do something meaningful together. It’s a fun team building activity as well, if there weren’t already enough reasons to join!

HOW DO I JOIN A BUN RUN?
Please follow the link to EventBrite. Simply select a preferred date and complete your registration, by clicking the Register button and enter your contact details.

1 day before the run Waste Free Hong Kong will email your collection tickets. These act as your volunteer ID and will include the groups meeting point and some more information on the codes of conduct.

WHAT IF I’M NOT A STRONG RUNNER?
Don’t worry! The run is fairly short at with routes around 2-3km.

Anyone who would prefer to help distribute the bread directly at the People’s Service Centre can do so.

Distribution takes place from 8:15pm every weekday evening, however, please let Waste Free Hong Kong know in advance, as they already have a team of dedicated volunteers, and Waste Free Hong Kong does not want to overload them with people.

You will meet at 7pm at the Central and Western District Promenade (just outside the Shun Tak Centre)

Call the stores roughly 30 minutes before closing time to confirm if they have surplus to donate. If not, give Waste Free Hong Kong a call to let them know.

Arrive at each store at closing time. Bring your own carrier bags.

Show your Bun Run confirmation ticket through your phone or a print out to the staff at the store.

Check the number of pieces donated and sign to confirm receipt. Take an official receipt if available.

Pack the bread CAREFULLY into your own carrier bags.

Bring the bread and receipt to the People’s Service Centre

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

There are three routes that Waste Free Hong Kong will run every Wednesday evening, each point will be led by one of their team members.

The closest MTR exit to the meeting point is Sheung Wan Exit D.

Where do we take the bread?
The People’s Service Centre is located at Room 206-208, Block 19, Shek Kip Mei Estate, Shek Kip Mei

When do we receive our tickets?
Tickets will be emailed 1 day before the Bun Run.

What if I have a problem on the night?
If you are running late, please call the store directly. Please call WFHK on 6360 5054 if you have a problem making your collection.

What if the store informs me there is no bread to collect?
All donations are subject to availability on the night. If there is no donation, please thank the store for their time and call on 6360 5054 to let us know.

The Bun Run will be CANCELLED if No.8 Storm Signal (or above), Red Rainstorm Warning Signal or Black Rainstorm Warning Signal is hoisted or in force. Otherwise, it should still go ahead.
