Room to Read Hong Kong Chapter Volunteer Opportunities

8 Jun

The Room to Read HK Chapter is getting active for education and they have volunteer opportunities throughout the year!

Action points to get involved:

1. Sign up to help lead a Beers for Books event in June, September, October or December – you will buddy with an experienced volunteer and organise together.

2. Sign up to lead another event of your choosing (ideas here) – either with volunteers you know or let Room to Read HK Chapter share the opportunity with other volunteers too.

Unfamiliar with Beers for Books? Here’s the premise (in brief):
Room to Read volunteers organise casual drinks at a bar, usually mid-week.
• The venue donates HK$10* per drink back to Room to Read.
• Volunteers also organise a raffle to raise additional funds for Room to Read.

What volunteers do:
• Pitch the bar to host on a night that’s typically quiet and donate $10 per drink.
• Secure some raffle prizes (Room to Read can sometimes help).
• Promote the event in advance, show up on the night and bring friends.
• A few other logistical things e.g. get the banner in advance, deposit cash afterwards.

Just a few last points
Room to Read HK Chapter is kicking off with a Beers for Books event every second month, starting in June.
• Experienced HK Chapter volunteers will lead but need another volunteer to help them.
• If you’re super keen to take the lead and organize on what is currently an off-month, that’s totally fine too.

*Printing a Room to Read local-language children’s book costs around HK$10, so each drink purchased (usually beer/wine/other specials) puts one book in the hands of children in Room to Read programme countries. Room to Read HK Chapter can vary from this format though.

Please do sign up if you think you can help – it’s just an indication of interest and you’re not locking yourself into anything (yet) 😉

About Room to Read: Room to Read seeks to transform the lives of millions of children in low-income communities by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Working in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments, we develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children, and support girls to complete secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in school and beyond.

The vision of the Hong Kong Chapter is to share the work of Room to Read with Hong Kong residents and businesses. They support Room to Read’s belief that education is key to breaking the cycle of poverty and will focus their goals to help provide access to education to millions of children.
Volunteering with the Hong Kong Chapter is not only a great way to help further Room to Read’s mission but also an opportunity to develop new skills and make connections with like-minded individuals.
