Nepal Education Fund

Room to Read began working with rural communities in Nepal 15 years ago. They are relieved to report that 100% of their staff in Nepal are safe and accounted for. Room to Read’s Kathmandu office and field offices are closed this week so that their staff can support their loved ones. Like thousands of others in Nepal, many of their colleagues remain living in the safety of rescue camps due to aftershocks; however, they are anxious to return home and contribute to their country’s rebuilding efforts.

rtr nepalDuring natural disasters, those living in poverty are disproportionately affected, especially children. Right now, help is needed for the people of Nepal – first by providing critical emergency relief and then through repairing and reviving their communities and their lives. Room to Read is committed to rebuilding children’s lives through education, an effort which will include supporting schools, teachers, and students, so they can return to their normal routines.

Room to Read has benefitted 965,000 children in Nepal by working with more than 3,700 communities through their Literacy Program and more than 3,000 girls through our Girls’ Education Program. Many of their project sites are located in the Lamjung and Dhading Districts, which are two areas greatly affected by the earthquake. While Room to Read does not yet know the condition of their Literacy Program project sites or the impact on their Girls’ Education Program participants in these remote communities, in the coming weeks and months, the Room to Read team in Nepal will assess the damage to determine where their educational work is most needed. Towards that effort, Room to Read has set up the Nepal Education Fund that will ensure Room to Read can support children and teachers by helping to rebuild the educational system in Nepal.

To achieve this goal, Room to Read focuses on two areas where they believe Room to Read can have the greatest impact: literacy and gender equality in education. Room to Read works in collaboration with communities and local governments across Asia and Africa to develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children, and support girls to complete secondary school with the life skills they’ll need Room to Readto succeed in school and beyond by building and stocking libraries, building bright ventilated classrooms, publishing books in the local language, training educators and providing one-on-one support to teachers, and supporting girls to stay in school by providing material support—such as school fees, clean uniforms or transportation, in addition to mentoring and life skills training to help girls succeed in the classroom and beyond.
