Can teenagers do volunteer work?
Yes depends on the organisation and the task at hand. Hong Kong Dog Rescue takes teenagers 16 or older as dog walkers for example, as does Ronals McDonald House. People’s Food Bank welcomes children and teenagers. So choices are there
I have a Hk Id but i can only speak english and can’t speak cantonese nor mandarin . Do you have to be able to speak cantonese and madarin to volunteer ?
Thank you for your interest in volunteering. Whether they require a Cantonese speaker would depend on the nature of the volunteer work required. Outreach into the community for example would need someone who spoke Cantonese, but a dog walker would not need to speak Cantonese. Look through the list and see whether there are any volunteer opportunities listed that interested you, my suggestion would be to reach out to the organisations directly and ask. There are always links directly to their websites from each blog page.
Are there any volunteering jobs for kids aged 13, and can only speak english?
Most volunteer opportunities for teens generally ask for those ages 16 or older. The most common volunteer opportunity open to younger kids would be flag day appeals. Many charities in Hong Kong raise money by selling flags on a designated Saturday each day. It does take a bit of research to find charities you would like to support and to reach out to them. You can try the Kids4Kids Buddy Reading volunteer and service learning program. Please go to http://www.kids4kids.org.hk and find out more yourself. Kids aged 8+ and even university students are joining this program to not only service the underprivileged but to also learn from the process – becoming a more engaged citizen and also brushing up their own presentation and social skills.

To be frank Gary, I don’t know. Most organisations listed here require some sort of time commitment from their volunteers. You may want to look at the opportunities on the Hands On site to see whether there is something on their current volunteer opportunity listing that may suit your time frame.

Volunteer work is not employment. As far as I am aware, anyone can volunteer. Most organisations looking for volunteers will have their own set of requirements. It is best that you reach out to the ones that you would like to volunteer for and ask them directly. Good luck!

That’s an interesting question. If you want to use a volunteer opportunity to improve your English my suggesting would be to volunteer for organisations that are run by expats or serve expats. The China Coast Community for example provides residential care for English speaking elderly persons. Or you can look at Crossroads which was founded by Malcolm Begbie, a chartered accountant and Sally Begbie, a PR consultant. They sort donated goods and ship them to countries that need them. That is a difficult one. Hong Kong is a predominantly Chinese territory. Hospitals naturally prefer Chinese speakers so as not to frighten the children in their care. You might want to take a look at the Mathilda Child Development Centre (http://cdchk.org/) or Mother’s Choice (http://www.motherschoice.org/en/) and see whether they are looking for volunteers with your training. I noticed that quite a few ‘volunteers’ asked whether there were opportunities for english speaking only roles. The responses to this question seem to be that there are limited opportunities available of which dog walking seemed to be the most common suggestion. Is there a chance that we can find more opportunities as a non-cantonese speakers to give back to the community and enrich lives everywhere? Hong Kong is a Chinese territory, where speaking Chinese is vital for communication with the clients non profits are involved in order to ensure their comfort. Yes there are English speaking roles including working with expat elderly at the China Coast Community, giving English tutoring (Hands On lists these frequently), fundraising (Room to Read), working with babies (Mother’s Choice) or working with refugees. Just remember, while many would like to volunteer and give back, most volunteer roles require a fair amount of commitment of time and effort. There are very few ‘one off’ or short term volunteer opportunities available. These are generally seen as disruptive to the regular operation of volunteer agencies. Good luck in your search.
I’ve recently helped out with “Operation Smile”, non-profit organisation, where all volunteers are always welcome, whether you’re interested in helping out with admin, organising an event or helping with its medical team. There are plenty of organisations that welcome English speaking volunteers including Rood to Read, Habitat for Humanity, Crossroads, etc. You need to approach them directly to find out whether they have any volunteer opportunities that match your time frame.

Depending on your university programme, you might want to take a look at Justice Centre (what used to be HKRAC). I spent some time doing pro bono work there and got university credits for it as well (I’m doing an LLB at CUHK by the way).
To my understanding, there is a similar arrangement at HKU to send their students there.

I help run a English Speaking Scout Troop in Hong Kong and we are always looking for volunteers to bring kids hiking and on outdoor activities. Volunteer work is still work under Hong Kong laws. The Employment Ordinance states that children aged under 15 are prohibited from working in all industrial undertakings. The medical profession falls under this category.

Hi there, we’re Baking for a Cause, a charity delivering freshly baked pies to the needy. Before, we were an enthusiastic few who used networks of friends and business acquaintances to hold events to spread love during festive seasons. The number of volunteers has grown and now we are registering as a charity company. We will need individuals or a company to volunteer their expertise and time to maintain our charity website. Can anyone suggest how we may reach out to those who may be interested in offering us a helping hand?
Perhaps you can reach out within your group of volunteers and see whether one of them or someone they know can help you. It’s always best to reach out to those you already know and who in turn know and understand what you are trying to achieve when you start out. You can also start small, for example by creating a Facebook page first.

Hi. I am Thai and am interested in volunteering in HK during summer 2017. However, I asked the organization and they told me that foreigners with student/tourist visa are not allowed to do volunteer programs according to law of HK. Is it true?
I know that you cannot volunteer under a tourist visa, not sure about student visas. The best way to get the correct answer is to simply email HK Immigration and ask then: enquiry@immd.gov.hk

As long as you have a valid visa that allows you to reside in Hong Kong you can volunteer. As for what to do, that will depend on what your day off is, what you would like to do and whether they in turn have opportunities on those days.
Hands On is a good place to start looking as they offer many volunteer opportunities that are one off and are listed by date.

Welcome to Hong Kong! As an English speaker there are still volunteer opportunities for you. The Books & Beyond Reading Club which was recently posted is an example. At Food Angel you can help prep meals for the disadvantaged. If you are a dog owner, you you can be Professor Paws volunteer for Animals Asia Foundation that fights animal cruelty. Good luck!

There are a number of options for English speakers who wish to volunteer. Not knowing where your interests lie, I would suggest looking first at St. John’s Cathedral. They have a number of outreach ministries including counseling, serving domestic workers or migrant workers, and HIV education. The Clares are a diverse and multinational group, faith and non-faith, Cathedral and non-Cathedral members who sort and price donated goods for their Castaways shop.

Thanks for writing Al. I am happy to hear that you are interested in volunteering. Volunteer work is still regarded as work, where the minimum age to work is 18. Between 13 to 17 you can still work, but there are restrictions as to what you can do.
You might want to look at charities like Kids4Kids who actively encourage teens to voluntter. http://kids4kids.org.hk/en

Thank you for writing Curt. I am not sure whether hospitals take volunteers in Hong Kong. The government hospitals certainly don’t. You might want to try ringing the private hospitals like Matilda, Adventist, etc. and asking.
Hi! We are Querida and Zabrina, Y11 students at Chinese International School, and the co-founders of The Inquisitive Minds. The mission of The Inquisitive Minds is to provide online tutoring or homework guidance to children regardless of race or background.
Due to the COVID19 pandemic, there are currently more than 1.2 billion children in 186 countries worldwide affected by school closures. Although we are blessed by accessible educational resources, we have noticed that the pandemic and online learning have made learning more challenging for us and have been a source of additional stress. Therefore, our ultimate goal is to establish an international online tutoring organization, where international children can receive free education from tutors around the globe.
Our friend who is currently studying at a boarding school in the United States has already started this service for around 3 weeks now and it has been deemed a success. Students are benefiting from this unique learning opportunity, improving their attitude towards schoolwork, as well as boosting their confidence and self-esteem.
As we have formed this service group as a way to give back to our community, we would like to restate that this is volunteer work and tutors do not receive payment.
