    1. You are probably better off talking to the NGOs directly to find out. With so many programmes on offer, I am sure you will find one or more that would welcome you. Good luck!

    1. Yes depends on the organisation and the task at hand. Hong Kong Dog Rescue takes teenagers 16 or older as dog walkers for example, as does Ronals McDonald House. People’s Food Bank welcomes children and teenagers. So choices are there

  1. I have a Hk Id but i can only speak english and can’t speak cantonese nor mandarin . Do you have to be able to speak cantonese and madarin to volunteer ?

    1. Thank you for your interest in volunteering. Whether they require a Cantonese speaker would depend on the nature of the volunteer work required. Outreach into the community for example would need someone who spoke Cantonese, but a dog walker would not need to speak Cantonese. Look through the list and see whether there are any volunteer opportunities listed that interested you, my suggestion would be to reach out to the organisations directly and ask. There are always links directly to their websites from each blog page.

    1. Most volunteer opportunities for teens generally ask for those ages 16 or older. The most common volunteer opportunity open to younger kids would be flag day appeals. Many charities in Hong Kong raise money by selling flags on a designated Saturday each day. It does take a bit of research to find charities you would like to support and to reach out to them. Good luck!

  2. You can try the Kids4Kids Buddy Reading volunteer and service learning program. Please go to http://www.kids4kids.org.hk and find out more yourself. Kids aged 8+ and even university students are joining this program to not only service the underprivileged but to also learn from the process – becoming a more engaged citizen and also brushing up their own presentation and social skills.

  3. My son (15, HK Passport) needs to broaden his perspectives and see what is the real life of poor people in Hong Kong. He is fluent English and learning Mandarin. What organizations could offer opportunities at this age?

  4. http://www.soapcycling.org/ is another good one to check out. They allow older children and teens. They take leftover soap from hotels and turn it into usable soap for needy people who have sanitation issues and are in need of soap.

  5. Hi, I am in Hong Kong for 2 weeks on a tourist visa waiting for further visa approval. I would like to do something useful with my time. Would I suit any of these charity organisations?

    1. To be frank Gary, I don’t know. Most organisations listed here require some sort of time commitment from their volunteers. You may want to look at the opportunities on the Hands On site to see whether there is something on their current volunteer opportunity listing that may suit your time frame.

  6. Hi, im a domestic helper here in hk for nearly six years, i want to do something valuable and extend a hand to used my day off to help by volunteering. elderly care, story telling with impaired kids are one of my special field…but i have to ask this first..does domestic helpers allowed to do volunteer works? Thank you and God bless.

    1. Volunteer work is not employment. As far as I am aware, anyone can volunteer. Most organisations looking for volunteers will have their own set of requirements. It is best that you reach out to the ones that you would like to volunteer for and ask them directly. Good luck!

  7. Hello,

I’m a UK resident visiting HK for the summer. I have roughly three weeks left of my trip and would like to fill the time up volunteering. Do you think organisations would take on a short term volunteer?

    Thankyou for your help,

    Kally

  8. My husband and I want to do volunteer work during our leisure time. Meanwhile , we would like to take the opportunity to improve our English. May I know which choice will be suitable for our situation? Thanks.

    1. That’s an interesting question. If you want to use a volunteer opportunity to improve your English my suggesting would be to volunteer for organisations that are run by expats or serve expats. The China Coast Community for example provides residential care for English speaking elderly persons. Or you can look at Crossroads which was founded by Malcolm Begbie, a chartered accountant and Sally Begbie, a PR consultant. They sort donated goods and ship them to countries that need them. Good luck!

      1. Thanks a lot for your advice. It is very helpful for us as we are struggling whether we should spend our leisure time to learn English or to be volunteers. With your suggestion, we can not only practise our English but also help the needy. We will give it a try definitely. Thanks!

  9. I am an English speaking early childhood teacher who would like to volunteer my free time to help, support & encourage sick children in hospital. As I speak very little Cantonese I am having a bit of difficulty finding a place.
Please can you give me some advice?
    With many thanks,
    Kate

  10. Hi, I run http://www.pinworld.co where we teach kids about value of money, entrepreneurship etc. One of the initiatives we have is Pinancle’s Piggy Bank Club – they can join by by collecting any used tin, decorating it and using to collect for a cause they believe in.Hope some parents here find it useful.

  11. Is there a volunteer scheme that requires volunteers to be in contact with tourists?Because I need to complete the required hours for my education.Thank you:)

  12. Hi,
I like spending some time with some elderly women, chatting, shopping…Is there any organization where I can give some time to elderly ? Don’t want to be in any medical stuff, and care necessarily, and let some elderly be less lonely during week time.
    Thanks.

    Helen

  13. I’m 18 and speak fluent in english and cantonese, perhaps a little bit of mandarin as well. Currently looking for a residential activity which in this case– volunteering, by means places provided during the time I’ll be volunteering, for at least 5 days 4 nights as one of the tasks I have to complete for my Gold Duke of Edinburgh award. Any suggestions?

  14. I’m 18, a foreign college student who is going to be in Hong Kong for two months in the summer, my aunt lives there with a work visa. I am going to take an intensive French course at the Alliance Francaise and I am looking for volunteer opportunities so that I have something else to do to fill my time for the two months I’m there. The question is, can a foreigner without a HK ID volunteer there? And I don’t speak cantonese too so I was wondering if there are any English speaking organizations I can volunteer in.

    1. Welcome to Hong Kong. The summer tends to be a bit quiet when it comes to fundraising events. You can take a look at the China Coast Community which provides residential care for English speaking elderly
      https://hongkongvolunteer.wordpress.com/2013/08/29/china-coast-community/

Hands On sometimes has volunteer listings looking for volunteer English tutors etc.
      https://hongkongvolunteer.wordpress.com/volunteering/serving-the-community/volunteer-opportunities/

Or you can check with Hong Kong Dog Rescue and see whether they need dog walkers
      https://hongkongvolunteer.wordpress.com/volunteering/animal-rescue/hong-kong-dog-rescue/

      Good Luck!

  15. My friend and I are both 16/17 this coming summer and we were thinking of going to hong kong this summer. I’m originally from HK and I know basic cantonese but my friend only speaks english. Are there any short term volunteer opportunities for english speaking youths?

    1. You need to check with individual charities to see whether they accept volunteers under 18. As for English speaking volunteer opportunities, see my previous answer. Good luck!

  16. Hi and thank you sincerely for taking the time to create this valuable website as a great resource. I noticed that quite a few ‘volunteers’ asked whether there were opportunities for english speaking only roles. The responses to this question seem to be that there are limited opportunities available of which dog walking seemed to be the most common suggestion. Is there a chance that we can find more opportunities as a non-cantonese speakers to give back to the community and enrich lives everywhere? Again, many thanks for your excellent service to the community. .

    1. Hong Kong is a Chinese territory, where speaking Chinese is vital for communication with the clients non profits are involved in order to ensure their comfort. Yes there are English speaking roles including working with expat elderly at the China Coast Community, giving English tutoring (Hands On lists these frequently), fundraising (Room to Read), working with babies (Mother’s Choice) or working with refugees. Just remember, while many would like to volunteer and give back, most volunteer roles require a fair amount of commitment of time and effort. There are very few ‘one off’ or short term volunteer opportunities available. These are generally seen as disruptive to the regular operation of volunteer agencies. Good luck in your search.

  17. I’ve recently helped out with “Operation Smile”, non-profit organisation, where all volunteers are always welcome, whether you’re interested in helping out with admin, organising an event or helping with its medical team. It’s not as well known as some charities as all proceeds go back in to its missions rather than to advertising. Check out some of their worldwide missions on YouTube.

  18. Can 12 year olds do the volunteering? I speak fluent English and Mandarin, I know Cantonese but I don’t speak it as fluently as English and Mandarin

  19. I’m 21, with a Hong Kong ID. I’m visiting in the summer for 2 months and I can speak English fluently. My Cantonese is fluent too but not as good as my English,I also can’t read or write Chinese. Is there any volunteer work around June – Aug ?

    1. There are plenty of organisations that welcome English speaking volunteers including Rood to Read, Habitat for Humanity, Crossroads, etc. You need to approach them directly to find out whether they have any volunteer opportunities that match your time frame.

      1. Call to Volunteers for AVPN 2016 Conference! We are looking for volunteers interested in social investing and philanthropy in Asia. The Conference will be held in Hong Kong from 23 – 25 May 2016. Volunteers get a free ticket and unlimited networking time!

    1. Depending on your university programme, you might want to take a look at Justice Centre (what used to be HKRAC). I spent some time doing pro bono work there and got university credits for it as well (I’m doing an LLB at CUHK by the way).
To my understanding, there is a similar arrangement at HKU to send their students there.

  20. Hi. I’m currently studying in the UK, but am a permanent resident of Hong Kong. I will be coming back to Hong Kong in the summer, and would like to make the most of my summer, and gain some experience by volunteering. I’m 14 and have no problem speaking Cantonese and English, but I need some help finding some opportunities. Are there any advice that can be offered?

  21. I help run a English Speaking Scout Troop in Hong Kong and we are always looking for volunteers to bring kids hiking and on outdoor activities. I notice that the scouts are not on your list, what in your opinion would be the best way for scout groups such as mine to find volunteers? We are really running low on adult volunteers.

  22. Is there anything I (13 year old) can do about hospital or clinic things so I can learn while I help?

    1. Volunteer work is still work under Hong Kong laws. The Employment Ordinance states that children aged under 15 are prohibited from working in all industrial undertakings. The medical profession falls under this category.

  23. I’m a 19 year old student from Canada but I also have a Hong Kong ID card. I’m fluent in English and basically fluent in Cantonese but I can’t read or write in it. In addition, I’m a Biology/Pre-vet major, are there any opportunities that fit those categories? (I’m planning to volunteer summer 2017). Thanks!

  24. Hi there! I am a volunteer for Child Welfare Scheme, a registered charity listed above. We are currently seeking volunteers to help out at our 16th Lamma Fun Day event. May I know how could I get in touch with the editor of this blog? Thank you!!!

  25. Hi there, we’re Baking for a Cause, a charity delivering freshly baked pies to the needy. Before, we were an enthusiastic few who used networks of friends and business acquaintances to hold events to spread love during festive seasons. The number of volunteers has grown and now we are registering as a charity company. We will need individuals or a company to volunteer their expertise and time to maintain our charity website. Can anyone suggest how we may reach out to those who may be interested in offering us a helping hand?

    1. Perhaps you can reach out within your group of volunteers and see whether one of them or someone they know can help you. It’s always best to reach out to those you already know and who in turn know and understand what you are trying to achieve when you start out. You can also start small, for example by creating a Facebook page first.

  26. Hi, I am a marketing undergraduate in the UK and looking into oppurtunities to volunteer or find an internship in Hong Kong for summer 2017. I have a british passport, do i need a visa to volunteer in Hong Kong?

    Kind regards, Charlotte

  27. Hi. I am Thai and am interested in volunteering in HK during summer 2017. However, I asked the organization and they told me that foreigners with student/tourist visa are not allowed to do volunteer programs according to law of HK. Is it true?

    1. As long as you have a valid visa that allows you to reside in Hong Kong you can volunteer. As for what to do, that will depend on what your day off is, what you would like to do and whether they in turn have opportunities on those days.

Hands On is a good place to start looking as they offer many volunteer opportunities that are one off and are listed by date.

  28. I am 13 years old and I am an animal lover, I want to do something for the animals in HK, is there anything suitable for me?

  29. Hello, we are students from an international school in Hong Kong. We are researching on income, wealth and education amongst post-secondary school students. 1. Welcome to Hong Kong! As an English speaker there are still volunteer opportunities for you. The Books & Beyond Reading Club which was recently posted is an example. At Food Angel you can help prep meals for the disadvantaged. If you are a dog owner, you you can be Professor Paws volunteer for Animals Asia Foundation that fights animal cruelty. Good luck!

  32. Hi
I am a professional have an experience of 4 years in HR as shifted in Hong Kong looking for job but also interested in volunteering or internship . Could you suggest me which organisation and where to apply and all the details and I am fluent in English but don’t know cantaonese or madrien language
    Do reply

    1. There are a number of options for English speakers who wish to volunteer. Not knowing where your interests lie, I would suggest looking first at St. John’s Cathedral. They have a number of outreach ministries including counseling, serving domestic workers or migrant workers, and HIV education. The Clares are a diverse and multinational group, faith and non-faith, Cathedral and non-Cathedral members who sort and price donated goods for their Castaways shop.
      http://www.stjohnscathedral.org.hk/

You can also take a look at the China Coast Community, a residential care for English speaking elderly persons.
      https://www.chinacoastcommunity.org.hk/

      Good luck!

  33. Is there anything I could do as a 14 year old? Looking for some volunteer work that’s challenging yet not impossible. Thanks.

    1. Thanks for writing Al. I am happy to hear that you are interested in volunteering. Volunteer work is still regarded as work, where the minimum age to work is 18. Between 13 to 17 you can still work, but there are restrictions as to what you can do.

You might want to look at charities like Kids4Kids who actively encourage teens to voluntter. http://kids4kids.org.hk/en

      Good luck!

  34. Are there any hospitals that I can volunteer at if I want to gain experience before applying for universities?

    1. Thank you for writing Curt. I am not sure whether hospitals take volunteers in Hong Kong. The government hospitals certainly don’t. You might want to try ringing the private hospitals like Matilda, Adventist, etc. and asking.

  35. Hi! We are Querida and Zabrina, Y11 students at Chinese International School, and the co-founders of The Inquisitive Minds. The mission of The Inquisitive Minds is to provide online tutoring or homework guidance to children regardless of race or background.

Due to the COVID19 pandemic, there are currently more than 1.2 billion children in 186 countries worldwide affected by school closures. Although we are blessed by accessible educational resources, we have noticed that the pandemic and online learning have made learning more challenging for us and have been a source of additional stress. Therefore, our ultimate goal is to establish an international online tutoring organization, where international children can receive free education from tutors around the globe.

Our friend who is currently studying at a boarding school in the United States has already started this service for around 3 weeks now and it has been deemed a success. Students are benefiting from this unique learning opportunity, improving their attitude towards schoolwork, as well as boosting their confidence and self-esteem.

As we have formed this service group as a way to give back to our community, we would like to restate that this is volunteer work and tutors do not receive payment. As a newly founded service group, we are currently looking for interested students aged 14 or below. Please fill in this form if you’re interested!

If you have any questions, feel free to contact theinquisitiveminds2021@gmail.com.

Thank you so much for your time and your support!

    Sincerely,
    Inquisitive Minds
